Hope you are all well. If you are following me over on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/yellowpolkadotbikiniblog/) you will have seen that I went to a really cool speakeasy in Dublin last week, ‘The Blind Pig.’
When I put this up on snapchat (@yellowpolkadotb) I got a few messages asking me what exactly a speakeasy was. So for those of you who may not know, a speakeasy is an underground or illicit establishment that sells alcohol. They came about during the Prohibition (1920-1933) in the US when alcohol was illegal. It was a secret place you could go to drink. When alcohol was legalised they disappeared but they have started to pop up again as a sort of hipster, underground cocktail phenomenon. They are legal now so don’t worry!
This particular speakeasy is hidden away in the basement of a popular Dublin restaurant. You book your place online at http://www.theblindpig.ie and pick a time slot. You then receive a top secret email giving you directions. I have to say this is a really nice touch. The email tells you not to reveal anything and if you’re asked what you’re doing you simply reply that you’re here for the old lady’s funeral.
On arrival you will descend some stairs and come to a bookcase. A secret button, revealed to you in the email will be hidden behind a photo frame. You press the button and the bookcase turns into a door, opening up, revealing the hidden cocktail bar.
When we visited we went for dinner and drinks but you can go just for drinks if you like. The cocktail menu changes every month so you are really spoiled for choice. The menu is tucked away in an encyclopedia to give it a really underground and secret feel.
We ordered the chicken wings for starter and for main we had the Dirty Burger which came with a cocktail called the Dirty Cocktail.
The cocktails in The Blind Pig are really special. The menu was created by internationally award winning mixologist Paul Lambert and you can tell! After our Dirty Cocktails which were something like a Moscow Mule we delved into the October Cocktail Menu.
I ordered a Maiden’s Blush which was a gin based cocktail with fresh lemon juice, homemade raspberry syrup and absinthe. It was served in a china tea cup. My other half ordered a Gin Sazerac which was another gin based cocktail with sugar syrup, rhubarb, cherry, Peychaud’s bitters, Chilli and sambuca Mist. This one is not for the faint hearted!
The Blind Pig also do cocktail classes which cost €30 per person. It is also available for private functions so could be a good option for your Christmas Party.
